Black Sea of Sunflowers: Remembering Maksym Kryvtsov

 On January 22, Maksym Kryvtsov, Ukrainian poet and photographer, would have turned 35. He was killed last year while defending his homeland from Russia’s ongoing attack. Kryvtsov used plain language to capture the sensation of existing on the threshold between life and death. His visceral poetry invites readers to glimpse his experiences at the front, while highlighting the life that persists in the darkness of war. Larissa Babij and Helena Kernan, who are translating Kryvtsov’s poetry collection Virshi z biynytsi (Poems from the fire trench) into English while in residency at the BCWT, will share Kryvtsov’s poetry in English and discuss the phenomenon of Ukrainian literature being written on the frontlines.
