Visby’s medieval centre has been frozen in amber for centuries, its cobblestone lanes, church ruins, and towering city wall so well preserved that the Swedish island’s capital earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995. On this walking tour, you’ll trace how Visby rose from a Viking-age trading post to become the Baltic’s most powerful Hanseatic city. You’ll also hear how Danish invasions, the Black Death, and the Reformation brought that golden age to an end.

The tour starts at the Port Terminal, where you’ll get your bearings before heading into the old town. You’ll pass through Skansporten, a gap cut into the medieval wall in 1879 for horse-drawn artillery, and stop at Söderport, the Southern Gate, where merchants once paid customs duties and archaeologists later found medieval arrowheads embedded in the stonework. Along the way, the story of how Visby’s fortunes shifted – from Hanseatic powerhouse to quiet backwater – unfolds stop by stop.

From Klinttorget, once known as Whipping Square after its public punishment pole, you’ll continue past the Gunpowder Tower, the oldest structure in the wall, built around 1150 as a free-standing castle before the ring wall existed. You’ll also explore Almedalen, the serene park that was once the busiest harbour in the entire Baltic, and Stora Torget, where a 4,000-year-old Stone Age settlement lies beneath the cobblestones.
