Charlotte Smitterberg och Judith Dekker ställer ut konstverk tillsammans i Galleri Apoteket under utställningstiteln ”Reanimated Darlings”
”Reanimated Darlings”

Charlotte Smitterberg och Judith Dekker

(English see bellow)

We are two artists who have previously exhibited together in the exhibition ”Minnets sanna rum” in Langska huset in Visby. We have also been studion-neighbours. Since we think that our art works somehow communicate with each other and have similar themes, we would like to explore it even more.

The gallery`s theme ”Lager” (Warehouse) is something we can recognize ourselves in, andwe, too have some works that have never or too rarely been shown.

Our title ”Reanimated Darlings” is a pun on the expression ”Kill your darlings” to take away the ”most beautiful” for the sake of the whole. We want to dive into our stores and pick out the works that appealed to us a lot but which we chose to leave out of previous exhibitions because they were different and did not fit in with the overall or thematic nature. Since then, these unique and slightly different works have not been shown and their ”moment”may have passed.

We will collect and together select these works , maybe alter them, and create a new
exciting space for them. The goal is to discover and show our works in a new way in a
common context. New narratives and new life may arise in forgotten themes.

I´ve worked as an artist and as an art teacher since I graduated from Konstfack (University of Arts, Crafts and Design) in 1992. Before that I studied at several art schools.  Gotland has been my home for many years. Together with other artists, I ran the studio association Milo and collaborated around exhibitions both there and in other places. In 2018, I moved back to Stockholm. I participate in various art projects and exhibitions, separately or with other artists and have had board assignments in art, studio and gallerym associations.  Above all, I work with painting, with the transparency of the color and the structure of the surface in focus. I build up my paintings in many layers which enhance the depth of the image and the expression I want to achieve. I want to create environments and rooms in my paintings, touch the events in the present and from the memory. The door, window and wall become a structure for the interaction between the external reality and the internal.

I attended the Artacademy (HKU) in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and have worked since 1995 as an artist and art teacher. Since the summer of 2019, I have been a full-time artist. In the Netherlands, I mostly worked with site specific art, video, installations, etc. In 2003 I moved to Gotland and worked mostly with painting, (watercolor and acrylic) but also objects, photography, installations and performance. I have exhibited in artist-run galleries, at Körsbärsgården, on art routes and with projects of my own (in collaboration with other artists). I have been member in various boards and working groups within the arts. I grew up in the Dutch countryside and the landscape is a keynote in my work. The landscape is characterized by geometric shapes, a landscape created by man. Dikes, large and small canals, pyramidal roofs create a landscape like a patchwork. I have made paintings, collages and objects based on these shapes and the colors, to which I have a strong connection. I create new images with these landscape fragments that can be moved and turned, are changeable. A personal, flexible reconstruction of the original landscape, where the
perspective can be changed.
